DIY Fabric Wall Art

My sons room has been looking pretty bare. We moved into a new apartment on August 2nd, and I had yet to decorate. Luckily I have tons of fabric and discovered that you can iron fabric to the walls. It's a perfect way to decorate if you rent and don't want to have to re-paint before you move out. It's also a great way to make wall art that you can easily move around. Not only that but it's cheap, easy, fun, and 100% customizable.

To start, I used photoshop and a good block font (I used Homestead, which you can download here) to make full page letters to print out. After you print the letters, cut them out.

Next, lay your fabric down so the "wrong" side of the fabric is facing you. Arrange all your letters (make sure they are backwards, that way when you cut them out they will be facing the correct way) and trace them with a disappearing ink fabric pen.

Arrange your letters onto the "wrong" side of the fabric.
Make sure you placed your letters backwards!

Trace your letters onto the fabric with a fabric pen

Carefully cut all your letters out (I recommended the block print because it makes cutting so much easier). Once you are finished you can go take a look at where you want to place them on the wall. I pretty much eyeballed my placement, so it's not perfectly straight, but the great thing about this is that you can easily peel the letters off and put them in a new spot!

Plug your iron in and put it on the hottest setting. I like to start at the top of the letter and iron down, carefully putting the letter into place as I go. You might need to go over it a few times to make sure it's fully stuck to the wall (tip: the wall I ironed these on has little "popcorn" pieces. It will work, though it's not an ideal surface. Your iron will push down surrounding popcorn pieces and take the paint off the top of them. I'm not too worried about this, but if you are and have textured walls, try putting your fabric designs on a flat surface such as a closet or bedroom door.)

Ironing the letters onto the wall

Viola! Wall art! You can cut out lots of other things besides letters. Search for animal silhouettes or fun designs to cut out of fun fabric. My next wall art project is going to be some owls and possibly a tree to put in Eli's room.

Finished wall art!

Free Printable Labels

I love a lot of things, but this post is focused on my love of organization and labels! I'm a sucker for a well organized home. Everything in it's place and a place for everything. Right now the majority of my organization has gone into the kitchen, and that's one great place you can use these labels. I like to store all my bulk food in mason jars so it stays fresh, keeps any kind of critters out, and it just looks nice (everything looks better when stored in glass), and these labels are great for that. You can also label cabinets, drawers, all of your craft supplies. The things you can label are endless, and now you can print out these free labels to help you in your quest for organization!

You can download these lovely labels here. You can buy sticker paper, print the labels, then cut to size (or you can just print on paper and tape them on.)  Leave a comment telling me what you're going to label them with!

Campsite #5

Me and my son, Eli, hanging out in one of the Campsite #5 tents I made

I was recently handed a new business opportunity, partner at Campsite #5. Campsite #5 is a purveyor of kitschy handmade play tents using fun vintage fabrics and sheets. I construct the fabric tents (my partner, Peter, handles the frames and the business side of things) and would consider myself part of the design team (I've been coming up with ways to perfect our current pattern.)

I'm excited to see what comes of this awesome opportunity. If you're in Austin, stop by the Renegade Craft Fair November 24th-25th at the Palmer Events Center to see our booth!
